It was established in 1811 on a land tract donated by a Revolutionary War soldier, Colonel William Lytle, and renamed Murfreesboro after Colonel Hardy Murfree. Hardy Murfree was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army of North Carolina. In 1779, he was one of ten men chosen by General George Washington to lead the Battle of Stony Point. He's probably best known for leading his infantry to a successful attack on Stony Point, a British bastion on the Hudson River. Throughout the war, he was a valuable soldier, serving as major and then lieutenant colonel. After the war, he was active in politics and served as a judge.
