Country isn’t just on the rise in the United States but right here in the United Kingdom as well. It isn’t just the big names like Keith Urban or Miranda Lambert who are making waves on the Country scene. Not so long ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Kendal Conrad, who’s an upcoming Country artist from Pennsylvania, USA.
Kendal’s journey onto the Country scene started at a young age. She grew up taking inspiration from musicians such as Whitney Houston and Hilary Duff. Growing up at the same time as Hilary meant that she was able to relate to one of her childhood icons. One of the first ever concerts Kendal went to was a Hilary Duff performance in Philadelphia, which she remembers quite fondly.
It wasn’t just Hilary D & Whitney H who played an inspirational role in Kendal’s journey growing up. The country scene had started to help influence her as an aspiring artist, with Shania Twain & Faith Hill being two of many avidly listened to Country singers. However much of a role these artists played in Kendal’s early years it didn’t help that the popularity of the genre wasn’t as popular in her home state of Pennsylvania, as it is in southern states such as Georgia & Tennessee. This made it more difficult for her to keep up to date with the world of Country.
Kendal went for every opportunity she could growing up to ensure that she could continue to pursue her dream. In the Fourth Grade at Elementary School, Kendal auditioned for the main solo in one of her schools’ choir concerts. At the time, the odds didn’t favour her as it was expected that the fifth graders were going to take the key vocal parts. Her determination managed to pay off as she succeeded in attaining one of the main solos. She continued to pursue talent after talent show singing ballads to try to gain as much experience as she could to develop her skill base.
After a while of performing these Ballads, Kendal realised that it wasn’t something that she wished to continue, so she honed in on the genre of Country. When Kendal’s attention became fixed to the genre, she knew that the world of Country suited the style of music that she wished to play. She felt an instant connection with the Country songs she was performing this led her to start writing and recording her very own songs. A lot of the lyrics she writes mean something of great personal significance to her. She writes about her life experiences and situations that she wished could have played out differently. This helps her to put her own variation and unique twist on the songs she records such as “Country Queen.”
One experience in which Kendal holds dear to her is when she had the opportunity to sing a duet with Keith Urban live on stage at Musikfest in Bethlehem Pennsylvania back in the summer of 2014. “My go to highlight is still Keith Urban. When I sang with Keith Urban over the Summer…I can’t believe I even did that.”
Kendal continues to look up to the future and knows exactly where she wants to be: “The goal right now is, get a label, to get signed and to get on radio…” The biggest challenge Kendal now faces is getting her name out there and getting noticed for the talent she has, as the genre of Country is getting ever harder to break into. However, if the past is anything to go by, and Kendal continues to fight for her dream, then this talented singer has a bright future ahead of her.
Below is “We Were Us” as sung by Keith Urban featuring none other than Kendal Conrad.
